Our founding expertise and continued strength
Construction is where Lead Edge Ltd began. We have extensive experience assessing carpentry and construction apprenticeships, and our assessors are skilled tradespeople who understand the demands of the industry.
The Level 2 Carpentry and Joinery apprenticeship is designed to assess individuals with the core skills required to work with wood in the construction and manufactured timber industries. It assesses the foundational knowledge and practical skills needed to progress as a competent craftsperson.
To reflect the different environments in the industry, apprentices must choose one of two distinct pathways:
Focus: Working primarily on-site (often outdoors or in unfinished buildings).
Core Duties: Carrying out "first fix" work (such as installing floor joists, roofing timbers, and partition walls) and "second fix" work (such as fitting doors, mouldings, and kitchen units).
Focus: Working primarily in a workshop environment.
Core Duties: Using traditional hand tools and specialized machinery to manufacture timber products. This includes crafting high-quality doors, windows, staircases, and bespoke architectural fixtures before they are sent to the site for installation.
To complete the apprenticeship, learners must pass an independent End-Point Assessment (EPA) after completing their training. The EPA assesses the apprentice's skills, knowledge, and behaviors through three specific methods:
The Level 3 Advanced Craft Carpentry and Joinery apprenticeship is a high-level technical assessment designed to assess complex timber tasks. Level 3 focuses on advanced craft skills, intricate geometry, and the ability to manage small teams or projects.
At Level 3, the complexity of work increases significantly within the two chosen routes:
Focus: Complex structural work and high-level finishing on construction sites.
Advanced Duties: Constructing complicated roof structures (e.g., diminishing trusses, dormers, and hips), installing curved timber features, and managing the setting out of complex building frames. They are often responsible for interpreting intricate blueprints and leading smaller teams.
Focus: Production of high-specification, intricate joinery in a manufacturing environment.
Advanced Duties: Creating "bespoke" items such as curved doors and windows, intricate staircases with continuous handrails, and ornate panelling. This pathway often involves the use of advanced machinery (CNC) alongside traditional hand-crafting techniques to achieve perfect tolerances and finishes.
The Level 3 End-Point Assessment (EPA) requires the apprentice to demonstrate not just skill, but also a deep understanding of planning and problem-solving:
Lead Edge make EPA easier for training providers with our purpose-built end point assessment centre specifically for carpentry and joinery apprentices. This makes it easier for the training provider to organise end point assessment without requiring the college, provider or employer to supply time, space, or materials.
Our EPA centre is custom-built for apprentices to complete their assessment plan.
Our assessors are fully vetted industry experts with years of experience.
All the materials and equipment are provided for apprentices to complete their End Point Assessment.
